'Shellshock' officially closed: Campaign participants raised tremendous
amount of money
'Shellshock', the EAZA Turtle and Tortoise Campaign was officially closed
during a plenary session at the EAZA Annual Conference in Bath on 9 September
2005. During this session the preliminary results of the campaign were revealed.
Together, the 120 EAZA members and several non-EAZA member participants,
have raised the tremendous amount of:
250.058,60
In the coming months, many of the campaign funds will be distributed
to the selected in situ projects. Participants will be kept updated on the
progress of these projects through the Shellshocking Newsletter and the EAZA
website.
Shellshock Special
Awards
Next to the announcement of the preliminary fundraising results, the four
Shellshock Special Awards for participating EAZA members were handed out.
The winners of the four special awards are: Munster (captive-breeding), Chester
(education), Fuengirola (exhibit) and Newquay (fundraising).
Continuation of efforts
It is hoped that the campaign will have a longer-lasting effect even after
the official closing. Shellshock may have been closed, but the need for money
for in situ conservation projects, public awareness and ex situ populations
in zoos still remains. Therefore, all participants are urged to continue
their efforts for turtle and tortoise conservation.
